Warning signs

AC Installation & Replacement: the warning signs

01

Your system is 12–15+ years old

Our long, hard cooling season wears systems out faster than in milder climates. Past this age, efficiency drops and major parts start failing.

02

It still uses R-22 refrigerant

R-22 production ended in 2020, so recharging an old system keeps getting more expensive. A leak on an R-22 unit is often the moment to replace.

03

Repairs keep piling up

If you've paid for several repairs in a couple of years, or a compressor or coil has failed, putting that money toward a new system often makes more sense.

04

Entergy bills keep climbing

An aging system runs longer to do the same work. If your summer bills are rising without a change in how you use the house, efficiency is slipping.

05

Some rooms never get comfortable

Hot upstairs bedrooms or a clammy back room can point to an undersized system, poor ductwork or a unit that was never right for the house.

06

The house feels clammy

Oversized systems cool the air fast, shut off and never run long enough to pull out moisture. Proper sizing fixes that.

What to do next

Thinking about replacing? Do this first

  1. 1

Find the age of your current system. The manufacture date is usually on the data plate on the outdoor unit, or encoded in the serial number.

  2. 2

Gather a year of Entergy bills if you have them, so we can compare summer usage before and after.

  3. 3

Make a list of comfort problems: hot rooms, humidity, noise, dust. These help us design the right system, not just swap boxes.

  4. 4

Check Entergy New Orleans' Energy Smart program for current rebates on high-efficiency equipment.

  5. 5

Get a repair-versus-replace comparison before deciding. A good contractor will tell you when a repair still makes sense.

Safety first: Don't accept a quote that sizes your new system by square footage alone or just matches the old unit's tonnage. Oversizing is one of the most common mistakes we see, and it leaves New Orleans homes cool but damp.

Call a pro right away if…

  • Your compressor has failed on a system more than 10 years old.
  • Your R-22 system has a refrigerant leak.
  • You're renovating, adding on or converting an attic and need more cooling.
  • You've had repeated breakdowns and want honest repair-versus-replace numbers.

When we arrive

What to expect from our visit

  1. 1

    In-home assessment

We look at your current equipment, ductwork, insulation, windows and comfort complaints, then run a Manual J load calculation to size the system correctly.

  2. 2

    Clear options, flat-rate quote

You get a few options at different efficiency levels and a flat-rate installed price for each, with no pressure to pick the most expensive one.

  3. 3

    Professional installation

We remove the old equipment, set the new system, seal and test the refrigerant lines, connect the drain with a safety float switch and check the ductwork connections.

  4. 4

    Startup and commissioning

We verify refrigerant charge, airflow, temperature split and drainage, then walk you through the thermostat and filter changes.

  5. 5

    Warranty and follow-up

Your system comes with a written parts and labor warranty. We register manufacturer warranties and are a phone call away if anything comes up.

Preventative care

How to keep it from happening again

Size for humidity, not just heat

In New Orleans, a correctly sized system that runs longer cycles removes more moisture. Bigger isn't better here.

Fix the ducts too

Leaky attic ducts can waste a big share of what a new system produces. Ask about duct sealing during your quote.

Pair it with a smart thermostat

A humidity-sensing thermostat helps a new system control moisture, not just temperature.

Protect your investment

Twice-yearly maintenance keeps manufacturer warranties in good standing and keeps efficiency where it should be.

Elevate and strap the condenser

If you're in a flood-prone area, a new install is the right time to raise the outdoor unit and add hurricane tie-downs.

Honest pricing

What it costs

Installed cost depends on the system size your home actually needs, the type of equipment (split system, heat pump or package unit), the efficiency level, whether ductwork, electrical or the drain system needs updating, and how hard the access is, like a tight attic in an older Uptown home. That's why we don't quote over the phone. After an in-home assessment, you get a flat-rate installed price for each option, in writing, with nothing added later. Check Entergy New Orleans' Energy Smart program for any current rebates, and ask about our military discount.

  • $99 diagnostic, waived with repair
  • Flat-rate price approved before work
  • No overtime fees — ever
  • Military discount available

From neighbors we've helped

“Replaced our 20-year-old unit with a Carrier Infinity. The tech explained SEER ratings and helped us get the rebate. Our July bill dropped from $340 to $262. So glad we found them!”
Claire B.Lakeview · AC installation
“Retired Navy — called for a second opinion after another company quoted $7,800 for a new system. Bradley installed a Trane for $6,200 and gave me 10% off for service. Real patriots.”

FAQ

AC Installation & Replacement questions, answered

What SEER2 rating do I need in Louisiana?
Louisiana is in the DOE's Southeast region, where new split-system central ACs under 45,000 BTU must be at least 14.3 SEER2. Higher ratings cost more upfront but cut summer bills, and we'll show you the trade-off.
What are the new A2L refrigerants?
Since 2025, new split systems use lower-impact refrigerants like R-454B and R-32 in place of R-410A. They're safe when installed to code, and we're trained and equipped to install and service them.
What brands do you install?
We install American Standard, ArcoAire, Carrier, Frigidaire, Goodman, Maytag, Rheem and Trane. We'll recommend what fits your home and budget, not what has the biggest margin.
How long does an AC replacement take?
Most straightforward replacements are done in a day. Jobs that include new ductwork, electrical updates or a change in equipment location can take longer, and we'll tell you upfront.
Should I replace my air handler and condenser together?
Usually, yes. Matched indoor and outdoor equipment is required for rated efficiency, and an old coil may not work with newer refrigerants. We'll explain the specifics for your system.
