AC Maintenance & Tune-Ups That Prevent Summer Breakdowns

Your AC in New Orleans works harder than almost anywhere in the country, often running from April well into October. A professional tune-up catches weak parts, dirty coils and slow drains before they leave you sweating in July. Our Comfort Club makes it simple: two tune-ups a year, priority scheduling and savings on parts.

Warning signs

AC Maintenance & Tune-Ups: the warning signs

01

It's been over a year

If you can't remember your last tune-up, you're due. A full season of heat, pollen and humidity takes a toll.

02

Bills are higher than last summer

Dirty coils and low airflow make the system run longer. Regular maintenance can save up to 20% on cooling costs.

03

Weaker airflow or longer run times

The system keeps up, but just barely. That's often a dirty coil, clogged filter or weakening part that's easy to fix now.

04

Musty smell when it kicks on

Moisture and debris in the drain pan or on the coil can grow mold and mildew in our humidity.

05

You've had a drain line clog before

Algae grows fast in Louisiana condensate lines. Every tune-up includes flushing the drain and testing the float switch.

What to do next

Easy maintenance you can do yourself

  1. 1

Check the air filter monthly in summer and replace it when it looks gray or dusty. Write the date on the frame.

  2. 2

Pour a cup of distilled white vinegar into the condensate line access port once a month during cooling season.

  3. 3

Keep plants, grass and stored items at least two feet away from the outdoor unit.

  4. 4

Gently clear leaves and debris from the top and sides of the condenser with the power off at the disconnect.

  5. 5

Keep supply vents and returns open and unblocked by furniture or rugs.

  6. 6

Set the thermostat fan to AUTO, not ON, so moisture drains off the coil instead of being blown back into the house.

Safety first: Don't pressure wash the condenser coil. It bends the fins and restricts airflow. Don't open electrical panels or touch the capacitor, which can hold a charge even with power off. Leave refrigerant checks and electrical testing to a licensed tech.

Preventative care

How to keep it from happening again

Tune up twice a year

A spring visit prepares for the heat. A fall visit catches wear from the summer and gets heat pumps ready for our short winters.

Schedule before the rush

Book your spring tune-up around Mardi Gras or Jazz Fest season, before the first real heat wave fills every schedule in town.

Change filters on a schedule

Set a phone reminder. A clean filter protects the coil, the blower and your indoor air.

Control humidity

Aim for 40–50% indoor humidity. Our Louisiana humidity guide explains how.

Prep for hurricane season

Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. Pair your spring tune-up with our hurricane prep checklist.
